Circle 7: Violence

1. Circle 7 is divided into three rounds: violence against neighbors, violence against themselves, violence against god, art, and nature. The sinners are people who are violent against their neighbors, themselves, nature, God and art. For the sinners violent again others, they are surrounded in boiling blood equal to that that they have spilled. For sinners violent against themselves, they are encased in thorny trees whose leaves are eaten by Harpies. The eating of the leaves causes the wounds to bleed, and only as long as the blood flows can the souls of the suicides speak-they destroyed their bodies so they are denied a human form. Their main doing in life was self-destruction so they may only speak through that which destroys them. Harpies are defilers of all they come in contact with. For the sinners against God, nature and art, they are exposed to varying degrees of exposure to fire above and below.

2. The sinners deserve to be in the boiling blood that they spilled because they chose to harm to their neighbors. For sinners violent against themselves, they are denied a human form because they destroyed their own.

3. In Christian myth, humans fell from innocence in the Garden of Eden to wickedness around the time of the Great Flood.

4.The different levels of punishment and hell being the underworld are some pagan influences.

5. Some of the famous people that Dante placed in round one are the tyrants Alexander, Dionysius, Ezzelino and Obizzo of Este, Attila, Pyrrhus, Sextus and Rinier Corneto and Rinier Pazzo. In round two, Dante sends Lano and an unidentified florentine who commited suicide. In round three, Brunetto, Capaneus, Guido Guerra, Tegghiaio Aldrobandi, and Reginaldo Scrovegni are sent to this circle.

6. Some people Dante might put into this circle from today might be the Oklahoma City bomber, and Jon Bennett Ramsey's Murderer.

I think the punishment fits the crime here. I also think they deserve to be the blood since they did violence against their neighbors and God.

Once again I think all the punishments fit each crime. This onc especially. They deserved everything they got.

I think that this was a sufficient punishment for these sinners. They either killed or harmed someone, killed themself, or did violence against God. I think that the Columbine shooters would definitely be put in this category of hell. In this level I would assume that they would appreciate the sanctity of life ( others and their own).

I agree with everyone that the punishment fits the crime! It took a lot of thought for him to come up with all these horrible punishments for these crimes! But Oedipus would be in circle one and his mother/wife would be in the second circle. Also, Odysseus' mother would be in circle two.

I definately agree that the punishment is well deserved but I think Dante had to have a huge imagination to come up with this stuff.

Boiling blood? This is pretty cool cause it fits what these people had a problem with in life. They most definately deserve their punishment.

Tracy, I agree that in this level that should appreciate the sanctity of life. This was the perfect punishment for these kind of people.

I didn't even think about Oedipus being in this level. I agree with that. I also agree that Dante had to have a huge imagination to come up with this stuff. I think that Cho, VA Tech shooter, would be placed into this level by Dante along with the others already mentioned.

Wow, alot of comments here but here I go too. I also think the punishment fits the sin. Boiling in blood equal to the amount that you spilled seems about right to me. How about Cho Seng Hu, the Virginia Tech killer in this level? If it were true he would be in over his head.

I am in total agreement that the Columbine shooters would be in this level. This level is what they deserve, if not more. Also, I think this punishment fits their crime.

I also agree that the punishment is fitting of the sin. "Love thy neighbor" wasn't a joke. I also think that Cho, the VT shooter and all the other school shooters along with people like Hitler and Osama should be put in this level. Merciless slaughter of innocent people is just a sick thought..Dante's vivid imagination serves this level well
